| History - Population - Location |
| The
Town got its name from the Cheyenne Indians and their water well.
The original Town was located near the fork of the Smokey Hill River,
which is five miles north of its present location. When it was located
north, it was a regular stop for the stagecoach line from Kansas
City to Denver.
The Kansas Pacific Railroad reached the
Town of Cheyenne Wells on March 3, 1870. The Town had a population
of 695 then. Cheyenne Wells was the division point of the Union
Pacific Railroad from 1890 to 1908. The Town was incorporated on
March 14, 1890. When it was incorporated it had an area of 520 acres.
Cheyenne Wells is the County seat of Cheyenne
County and has a population of approximately 1150. The climate and
environment are very healthy. The water supply is pure and unlimited. |

| Industry |
| Wheat
and other small grains furnish the main components of agricultural
enterprises. The small grain farmer and the cattle rancher furnish
the main source of income to the community. With an ample supply
of underground water, irrigation farming is becoming popular in
the area.
Another source of income is the Oil Industry.
Companies like Citations Gas & Oil Company, Mull Drilling, Murfin,
DCP Helium Plant, and Tech Oil have their offices located here.

| Restaurants, Lodgings, and Other Businesses |
| The Town
has several restaurants and quick stops. The Kwik Korner, Bottle
Barn, and Nan’s Convenience & Liquor Store serve sandwiches,
pizza, gas and much more. The Generation Gap serves great pizzas
and burritos in the eveings. Lazy Aces (bar & grill - in the
former Country Charm building) also serves meals in the evenings.
The Town has two motels. The Trail
In located on Highway 40 and the Plains
Hotel/Bed & Breakfast located on East 1st South. Either
can be your home away from home.
The downtown area has two hardware
stores, Hanks Hardware and Cheyenne Wells Lumber. Also Prairie in
Bloom flower shop. Hair Affair, Monica's, and Kay Ann’s Stylette
can help you with your hairstyle too.
The Town has a Post Office and a
weekly newspaper, The Range Ledger. |
